Every year on August 17, our nation celebrates National Nonprofit Day—a special time to recognize the nonprofit organizations and selfless individuals who work tirelessly to improve lives and strengthen communities.

Here in New Orleans and the Greater New Orleans metro area, this day holds an even deeper meaning. Our city is built on a legacy of resilience, generosity, and neighborly care. A Legacy of Giving

National Nonprofit Day marks the anniversary of the Tariff Act of 1894, which granted tax exemptions to charitable organizations—paving the way for the nonprofit sector we know today.

Fast forward to 2025, and the United States is home to more than 1.5 million nonprofit organizations. Here in South Louisiana, we’re blessed with hundreds of dedicated groups making a difference every single day.
