Celebrating Black Business Month: How You Can Make a Local Impact

August is National Black Business Month, and here at Fidelity Bank, we think it's the perfect time to shine a light on the incredible contributions of Black-owned businesses—not just nationally, but right here in our own backyards across Southeast Louisiana.

These businesses are more than storefronts. They’re legacy builders, job creators, and cultural icons that help our neighborhoods thrive.

A Look Back: Why August Matters

Black Business Month was co-founded in 2004 by entrepreneur Frederick E. Jordan and historian John William Templeton. Their goal? Highlight the achievements of Black business owners and bring attention to the systemic barriers they continue to face—from limited access to capital to unequal opportunities.

Despite these challenges, Black entrepreneurs have continued to grow thriving businesses and inspire future generations of leaders. That’s something worth celebrating.

Right Here at Home: Black-Owned Businesses in Louisiana

If you’ve lived in Louisiana for any amount of time, you’ve seen the heartbeat of our communities in action—Black-owned restaurants, shops, art studios, wellness providers, and startups shaping everything from culture to commerce.

Whether it’s a soul food kitchen in New Orleans, a boutique in Baton Rouge, or a home-based business in Slidell, these owners are putting in the work to make a difference.

How You Can Show Support This Month (and Every Month)

Supporting Black-owned businesses isn’t just good economics—it’s good community building. Here are a few simple ways to make a meaningful impact:

  • Shop local. Check out the NOLA Black Business Guide or your city’s chamber of commerce listings.
  • Share what you love. Tag your favorite businesses on social media or leave a glowing review.
  • Attend local events. Festivals, pop-ups, and markets often highlight Black creators and vendors.
  • Talk about it. Word of mouth still matters—a lot!
  • Bank with intention. Choose banks that offer inclusive access to financial tools and truly support local businesses.

Fidelity Bank’s Commitment
